But do somthing else, okay?" "Sure, Mom." Jenny looked at the TV and tried to hear what the mother on ´The Carters´would say about her danghter´s boy-friend. Jenny heard the apartment door close as her mother left. On the screen the mother and daughter were having an argument. Jenny thought about her family. Her father drove a truck, and was often away. Her mother worked nights as a waitress. Jenny did not have any brothers or sisters. It was not a real family. They never did anything or went anywhere together. ´The Carters´was over and a commercial came on. It was for ´Gleemo´,the toothpaste that makes you look beautiful. A pretty girl with white teeth sat in her boy-friend´s car and smiled at him. Jenny dreamt about being in the car with the boy,and looking like the girl. She thought about it every time she cleaned her teeth. She would not use any other toothpaste. "And now it´s time for ´Doctor Hardin´." It was Jenny´s favourite show. She would not miss it for anything. She could have joined the girls´basketball team, but practice was at the same time as the show. On the screen young, handsome Dr Harding jumped out of his sports car, walked into the hospital and smiled at the young nurses. Jenny loved this scene, even though it was the same every week. "Doctor, doctor, his girl seems to be dead!" Dr Harding hurried to the girl and began mouth-to-mouth breathing. Jenny let her mind wander. She imagined Dr Harding giving her mouth-to mouth breathing. Then he was kissing her. She was very happy. Suddenly there was a loud crash outside. Jenny´s mind snapped back to reality. She looked out of the window. Down on the street she could see a crowd of people. But she could not see what had happened. On the screen Dr Harding worked to save the girl. Outside Jenny heard a police siren. But she did not get up. Dr Harding had started the girl´s heart again. The operation had been a success. The screen showed Dr Harding´s handsome face. A commercial came on. Jenny heard an ambulance coming. She heard her neighbour´s voices in the hall talking about an accident. Jenny decided to find out about the accident during the commercial. She would be back before the shwo started again. She went outside. Then she saw the girl. The white body and red blood were like fresh paint against the black street. Jenny froze. The girl´s face was horrible and beautiful at the same time. It seemed more real than anything she had ever seen. And suddenly Jenny notieed everything: the badly damaged car, the ambulance lights, the police cars arriving. Mostly she heard the girl moaning with pain, and saw her frightened eyes. There were voices around Jenny. "An accident." "There´s the car." "Probably just some broken bones." "The poor girl." Jenny looked at the girl. No handsome young doctor had come to help her. No commercial stopped her pain. For a second Jenny wanted to change the channel to get away from the girl´s face. But the girl was not part of her TV world. She was part of the real world of pain. Two men put the girl into the ambulance. The crowed moved away in small groups. Jenny watched the ambulance drive away. Then Jenny walked back up the stairs to the apartment. At the door she heard the sound of the television. The last part of ´Doctor Harding´was still on. Jenny sat in front of the television. She tried to enjoy the show again. But the words sounded false. And Dr Harding´s face seemed like a plastic doll´s. Then Jenny realized something. People never feel great pain on ´Doctor Harding´. She remembered the girl´s face, she heard her moaning with pain. People never feel great pain on ´Doctor Harding´. She said the words again and again to herself. Click. The television dial sounded through the room like a locked door snapping open!
